It seems that some VMware executives, specifically New CEO Paul Maritz, agreed with my idea of celebrating the FREEdoms of July. With the announcement of the release of ESXi at no charge to everyone after July 28, 2008, the bar to virtualize your server environment has been lowered once again.

Today, VMware is taking another step towards making virtualization ubiquitous by announcing that VMware ESXi will be available for download at no cost as of the week of July 28, 2008.

VMware has always believed that virtualization needs to be ubiquitous. Since 2001, VMware has provided the industry’s most popular and reliable hypervisor used by more than 100,000 customers. During this evolution, partners like you have been critical in educating and delivering virtualization to customers of all sizes. In December 2007, VMware announced significant improvements with ESXi - its third-generation, stand-alone hypervisor. With its smaller footprint and OS-independence, ESXi ensures even higher levels of security and reliability while making virtualization easier than ever to deploy.

This really adds an interesting twist to the SMB market, now a small company which couldn’t afford the high cost of VMware may now be able to tap into the rich features and ease of management which it offers.

Bogomil Balkansky, senior marketing manager, said dropping the $495 license price for ESXi to zero will “accelerate adoption of VMware virtualization products and help companies get to 100% virtualization in their data centers.” While VMware is the current market leader, with $1.3 billion in revenues last year, much of the potential market for virtualization products remains untapped, especially among small and medium-sized businesses that that are just getting started.

Machine virtualization provides an abstraction layer between the hardware and the OS that's running on top of it. It also allows managing and simultaneously operating multiple environments on a single machine.

Application virtualization takes this concept and applies it to programs. The abstraction layer created by application virtualization lies between the operating system and the applications that run within it, allowing applications to be delivered dynamically as services that can be added or removed without installation....(read more)

Virtualization Short Take #14

Virtualization Short Takes are brief collections of various headlines and articles that I came across over the last week or so and my thoughts on them. Here's Virtualization Short Take #14.

Welcome to another installation of Virtualization Short Takes!

For you Quicksilver lovers out there that also run VMware Fusion, here’s a handy trick to allow you to launch Windows apps to run under Fusion via Quicksilver.

Duncan of Yellow Bricks points out this VMware Communities Forums thread discussing how to determine which host has a lock on a LUN. This thread also makes brief mention of the new VMFS version, version 3.31, that was released with ESX 3.5, which does a better job of handling SCSI reservations than previous versions. Good find, Duncan!

Speaking of the new VMFS version, a summary of the information shared in the VMware Communities Forums threads can be found here.

While we are on a bit of a storage kick, VMware has launched a new VMware Storage blog, and one of the early posts deals with VMFS. The post primarily attacks the notion of VMFS as a “proprietary” file system (which it is) by describing the advantages that VMFS provides. I’m hoping that the new storage blog will get more technical than marketing in the future, but the information is useful nevertheless.

This link falls more into the “ironic” category than anything else. Do you suppose he got into trouble with Citrix for blogging about how to use a competitor’s product to test ICA performance?

John Howard gives us an in-depth look at Hyper-V’s handling of virtual NICs in this article. This is particularly important for users who are interested in cloning VMs hosted on Hyper-V; I would assume that SCVMM 2008 will handle this correctly.

This news emerged several weeks ago via VMblog.com. It’s good to see Leostream getting some recognition; their broker is actually quite good in many respects.

Sven over at Virtualfuture.info recently blogged about XenServer’s HA functionality and how Marathon’s EverRun products play into that functionality. I actually had a conference call with the folks from Marathon several months ago about EverRun, but never got around to blogging about it. I do like the fact that you can control HA functionality on a per-VM basis, whereas VMware HA is applied to all VMs. (Well, I suppose you could disable HA for the VMs that you don’t want restarted, but it’s not quite the same.) I do agree with both Sven and PeterB’s comments regarding “Continuous Availability”; the sooner that VMware gets this functionality out the door, the more of a leg up they’ll have on the competition.

As has been reported elsewhere as well, Reflex Security has released the Reflex Virtual Security Center (VSC). The full press release is here. Based on what I’ve read thus far, it appears that the idea behind the VSC is to combine the information from multiple instances of their Virtual Security Appliance (VSA) so that users get the “full view” of what’s occurring across the virtual infrastructure. In this regard, it is remarkably similar to Altor Networks’ Virtual Network Security Analyzer (VNSA), which is also designed to provide visibility across the entire virtual infrastructure.

As always, feel free to share other interesting links and news in the comments below. Thank you!

The short term gratification from freeing rack space and lowering the electric bill soon gives way to the realization that all these VMs crowded in tight spaces significantly stress I/O channels, increase disk allocation complexity and compound the casualties from single points of failure. Face it, those discomforts will remain until you finish the job by virtualizing your storage. Only then will you be able to rapidly provision / migrate workloads, automatically load balance and fail over VMs, and non-disruptively backup and upgrade your equipment to attain the richer rewards of virtualization....(read more)

After the call, the company's stock reached an all time low, almost back to the IPO stage. In after hour trading, it dropped to $32.86. In this interview, Forbes asked what Maritz thinks about the stock price, what he thinks about the analysts saying VMware doesn't have a solid or innovative growth plan for the future, and question whether he thinks VMware should be part of EMC or not, where Diane Greene wanted to break away from EMC.

The era of virtualisation is now fully upon the technology industry. For businesses to thrive, adapting to the changing needs of their customers is paramount. For businesses to win, they must deliver the right solutions at the right time, and offer propositions that are more attractive to their customers than a competing solution. One word describes the nature of this kind of business environment: dynamic. The ability of business and the people that constitute it is not just to survive, but thrive in the face of these dynamic demands; and that is a direct function of the capability and fitness of the infrastructure of business systems that underpin and support their work. Business Technology Summit 2008, held 22-26 September 2008 in Mumbai and Bangalore, offers a program, replete with technical and business insights that guarantee you the keys to a flexible and dynamic IT.

DataCore Software, the leading provider of storage virtualization software, today announced that its SANmelody software is serving as the foundation of a replication and disaster recovery (DR) plan at Alameda County Medical Center (ACMC) that was orchestrated by DataCore partner Entisys. The IT environment at ACMC was fundamentally based upon products from Dell and EMC as well as virtual machines from VMware. ACMC is comprised of multiple sites and as a county hospital the organization is under a number of budget constraints. Entisys presented the Citrix XenServer and DataCore SANmelody DR solution based upon XenServer, which provides great savings to the medical center. “Instead of buying another EMC product to replicate the SAN, we showed them what DataCore can do and ACMC was able to complete a replication scenario for pennies on the dollar with XenServer and DataCore,” said Thad Morrow, Director of Sales, Entisys. “But it is not so much about the cost savings as much as it is a case where ACMC could use DataCore to support a very distributed environment where multiple vendors’ products are deployed and make a full-on disaster recovery solution possible.” ...(read more)

Containers mini-summit and Linux Symposium

While I am writing this, people are discussing the future of containers in the Linux Kernel at the containers mini-summit which is happening in Ottawa at the moment. You can check some rough notes from the event here. Three guys from OpenVZ team are there: Pavel Emelyanov, Denis Lunev, and Andrey Mirkin.

If you are attending Linux Symposium in Ottawa, note that this Friday, 25th, Andrey Mirkin will talk about containers checkpointing and live migration (12:00, Rockhopper room). It's going to be an interesting talk, do not miss it.

Also, this Wednesday, 23rd, Balbir Singh will lead a BoF on Memory Controller (17:45, Fiordland room). Memory controller is quite important for containers, and while some stuff are already in the mainline kernel, there's still lots to be discussed and developed in the area. You can think of this BoF as an extension to containers mini-summit.

VirtualLogix™, Inc. today announced Carrier Grade Virtualization™, the industry’s first solution that meets the performance, security, serviceability and availability needs of next generation, multicore-based carrier grade systems. VirtualLogix Carrier Grade Virtualization reduces the cost and complexity of maintaining carrier grade properties in edge and core network elements such as IP Multimedia System (IMS) nodes. As a result, networking and telecommunication original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can now reuse existing investments in their carrier grade systems while gaining the benefits of using VirtualLogix VLX real-time virtualization software. These benefits include faster adoption of multicore architectures and consolidation of hardware, reduced bill of materials, increased availability, improved time to market, and more efficient designs as a result. ...(read more)
