Here are some additional details.
This article was originally posted on blog.scottlowe.org.

Cisco recently launched a number of new products and new versions of products aimed at showing Cisco’s dedication and innovation in network switching. You can get Cisco’s summary of the products here. I’ll start with the hardware-focused announcements.

Hardware-Focused Announcements

Cisco’s announcements on the hardware side primarily centered around new switching capabilities in the form of 40/100 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) cards for both the Nexus 7000 series platform as well as a 40 GE card for the Catalyst 6500 series. (The 40 GE card for the Catalyst 6500 series does require the newer Supervisor Engine 2T, however.)

<aside>Did you know that the 40/100 GE specification, 802.3ba, was ratified in June 2010? I didn’t realize it has been ratified that long.</aside>

For the Nexus 7000 series, Cisco unveiled two cards:

The M2-Series 6-port 40 Gigabit Ethernet Module with XL Option (how’s that for a mouthful?) sports, as the name suggests, 6 non-blocking 40 GE ports. With 16 of these blades in the 18-slot Nexus 7018, that provides up to 96 ports of 40 GE connectivity. The “XL Option” in the name of the card enables the card—in conjunction with the Scalable Feature License—to support more IPv4 routes (up to 1 million, depending on several factors), more IPv6 routes (up to 350,000, again depending on several factors), and more access control list (ACL) entries. These increased route and ACL limits could be useful in environments with multiple Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF) or multiple Virtual Device Context (VDC) instances. Based on the Cisco data sheet, it looks like this card can work with either Fabric-1 or Fabric-2 modules, although you’ll need Fabric-2 modules for the most throughput.

The M2-Series 2-port 100 Gigabit Ethernet Module with XL Option provides two non-blocking 100 GE ports. The “XL Option” functions in the same way as with the 6-port 40 GE card, and it does work with both Fabric-1 and Fabric-2 modules. Here’s the official Cisco data sheet.

Based on the data sheet, it looks like both of these cards will require version 6.1 of NX-OS, which—to my knowledge—is a brand-new release. (Version 6.0 of NX-OS for the Nexus 7000 series was released in late December.)

One interesting note about the 40 GE card is that it supports the use of a breakout cable that allows a single 40 GE port to support four 10 GE connections. This is true for both the Nexus 7000 and Catalyst 6500 cards, as far as I can tell. (Cisco references a FourX connector for the Catalyst 6500 card, but does not reference the same connector for the Nexus blade, instead simply mentioning a “breakout cable”.)

Cisco also introduced the Catalyst 4500-X, a fixed configuration 10 GE aggregation switch. They mentioned “40 GE readiness,” but it’s not clear when 40 GE uplinks will make their way to this particular platform.

Rounding out the hardware announcements was the Nexus 3064-X, a follow-up the low-latency Nexus 3000 series of switches introduced some time ago. This version offers lower power consumption and additional reductions in switching latency. The specific switching latency reductions were not specified anywhere that I found.

Software-Focused Announcements

The software-focused announcements were primarily centered around the Nexus 1000V/1010 and a new feature called Easy Virtual Network (EVN).

A new version of the Nexus 1000V was announced that supports VXLAN (Virtual Extensible LAN). I’ve discussed VXLAN extensively (see here), as have others in the industry, so I won’t rehash that again.

Also of note is that the Cisco Virtual Security Gateway (VSG) will offer zone-based firewalling services to VMs on VXLAN segments.

The Nexus 1010-X is a “beefed up” version of the Nexus 1010 (yes, I know this is technically a hardware product), intended to support more virtual networks. See here for more information on the differences between the Nexus 1010 and the Nexus 1010-X.

Easy Virtual Network (EVN) is the most interesting of the software-based announcements (to me, at least). Cisco touts EVN as “fully compatible with established standards, including Multiprotocol Labl Switching (MPLS), MPLS VPN over IP (multipoint generic routing encapsulation, also known as mGRE), Multi-Virtual Route Forwarding (also known as VRF-Lite), and others.” (More information available here.) However, it appears that EVN doesn’t actually use any of these mechanisms. In fact, it’s unclear to me exactly what mechanism EVN does use. The data sheet (linked above) mentions the use of a VNET tag, and indicates that the VNET tag is stored in the 802.1q VLAN ID field. This looks like Cisco is creating yet another Layer 3 VPN solution, instead of leveraging existing solutions. Why not add VXLAN support to the hardware switches instead of creating EVN? Maybe I’m completely missing the mark here…feel free to correct me (courteously, of course!).

Why This Matters to You

All these product announcements and new product versions are pretty cool, but you might be wondering, “Why does this matter to me?” Good question. Here are my thoughts:

The 40 GE and 100 GE cards are important in data centers where we are seeing increased deployment of 10 GE to the servers. Once motherboard manufacturers start using 10 GE LoM (LAN on Motherboard) ports, the deployment of 10 GE to servers in data centers will naturally increase. Deploying 40 GE and 100 GE uplinks in 10 GE-heavy environments makes sense (depending on the details, naturally).

You already knew the VXLAN-capable 1000V was on the way (this was alluded to in the original VXLAN announcement at VMworld 2011), so no real surprises there.

The Nexus 1010-X simply allows you to run more VSBs (virtual service blades), such as the Nexus 1000V VSM (virtual supervisor module). If you’re a Nexus 1000V customer, you might have already started investigating the use of the Nexus 1010 to host the VSMs. Large customers (service providers, perhaps?) had a need for more VSBs on a single Nexus 1010, hence the Nexus 1010-X.

EVN…well, I’m stuck on EVN. I certainly see the need for simpler separation of traffic, but again I must ask why Cisco appears to be creating something new instead of re-using protocols that are perfectly suited for this purpose? Maybe I need a networking expert to explain it to me. (When I understand it, I’ll post an explanation that everyone else can understand. Fair?)

As always, feel free to post any clarifications or corrections in the comments below. I’d love to hear from any networking gurus on any of the points that I raised in this article.

The first part of the title of this article may seem like mathematics, but it’s really not. This is just about software packaging – a topic not so often discussed. In plain English, it basically says something like: one application with N features vs. N applications, each of which has one feature. More generally speaking, it can describe software entity with sub-elements. I will discuss it in the contexts of mobile/desktop, and virtual/physical.

From Desktop To Mobile

As a software professional, I am really impressed by the rapid growing number of mobile applications today. As estimated, there are more than 500,000 iPhone applications, similar number on Android, and less but good enough on Windows Phone 7.

While we are excited about the big number of choices, normal folks don’t really need that many applications at all. In general, majority of the applications are downloaded just a few times or even no download.

The long tail theory holds true, and it’s good for the store owners like Apple but not necessarily for majority of the app developers. That is a wholly different discussion that we’ll skip here.

Because of the limitation of computing power, small sized screen, lack of mouse and keyboard, it’s natural to have much smaller applications on mobile platforms. So far, it has worked pretty well.

Although rich in features, the traditional applications has majority of the features that normal users never use or think about. It’s fair to say 80% of users use only 20% features of applications like Microsoft Office. When the really simple mobile applications come, you can imagine the excitement.

While we sometimes find it a trouble to find particular menu/keystroke combinations in traditional applications, it’s no longer an issue in mobile applications – it just has one or two features therefore you can’t miss it.

However, the problem of finding right feature to get work done is not gone away. It just morphs to a different problem: finding a right application.

From Physical To Virtual

In theory, the rising of virtualization should not introduce the flatting out packaging. But because of the virtual appliance concept, the packaging in the virtual world is getting flatter than in the physical world.

For example, on a traditional operating system running on a physical machine, it normally has many applications installed. With virtual machines, you could do the same or simply package one application with one OS/virtual machine. It’s not that you cannot package only one application with OS in physical world, but that you can do it so easy and cost effectively in virtual world that it becomes feasible there.

The one to one mapping allows vendor to pre-install and configure an application in a virtual machine, therefore simplify installation and configuration. When a user receives the virtual machine, she can just run it with very few changes like IP address if static IP is needed.
While the installation/configuration issue is dramatically simplified for ONE application, you will have more operating systems to manage. This is the virtual machine sprawl as discussed in my previous article How to Avoid Virtual Machine Sprawl in Cloud Age.

A Rising Problem

While we solving the problem with traditional packaging, the solution brings a new problem, which is to manage more entities, either more applications or more virtual machines. It’s true that the single application or virtual machine is simpler and may easier to use, but the cost of extra applications and virtual machines are rising for sure.

Not only that, the information sharing is easier when an application or operating system is fat than when it’s flat. Multiple applications or virtual appliances takes more efforts and consumes more resources.

It’s hard and too early to say flat application or virtual appliance is a save or not. I don’t think there is a standard answer. Like most things, the result will be case by case.

This months monster edition of vNews is feature length presentation. So sit back relax as you hear our dulcet tones discuss the news. It’s bumper packed because it includes news of Dec and Jan compiled into one meaty edition.

As ever you welcome to download the vNews PPT file for use at your VMUG. Just give credit where credit is due – and name check the source & me & Stu. All the links mentioned in the vNews are in the PPT as well. I could cut them out and put them here to click – that would save you downloading a couple of MB for a link. But to be honest that would be too much work. I’m typing this on the free WiFi at Hong Kong airport after 12hr flight, waiting for connection to Brisbane – so extracting links doesn’t feel like a big priority right now…

This months vNews includes contributions from , Eric Sloof, Chad Sakac, Rick Sherer, and Scott Lowe. On the vendors side we have stuff from HP, Microsoft, Citrix and VMware.

Oh, If you don’t get the reference in the title of the post – you need to use google…

You can watch the video in number of formats. Youtube very kindly upgraded my account recently so I can now do longer videos on youtube.com. The quality gets pretty degraded on the Youtube version, so if you would prefer something a bit more native (but a perhaps a bit longer to buffer) you can use the video directly underneath here.

As ever if you want the MP3 version of the vNews it’s here – but to be honest it’s much easier to subscribe to the MP3 podcast via iTunes which means the chinwag/vendorwag podcast will be download when ever I do them – along with your monthly vNews. Alternatively, if you would prefer the videos on your iPAD/iPOD/iPhone – you subscribe to the video version of the Chinwags/Vendorwags/vNwws there (beware they are big!). If you don’t use iTunes, here’s the generic RSS Feed link

Finally, If you want to see the video in hi-resolution and full density – you can open it here.

NOTE: The first couple of minutes of this weeks vendorwag suffers from a bit of Skype latency, where the odd word is lost here and there. However, the call quality does improve massively after the first 2 or 3 minutes. Stick with us!

This weeks vendorwag is with Gil Levonai of Zerto. In case you don’t know Zerto are company that provides replication of VMs for DR purposes – and they use a virtual appliance model to add a replication layer to virtualization – as well as automating the failover and failback for both test and real DR events. In case you haven’t figured it out yet the company name is a pun on the phrase “Zero RTO”…

Here’s Gil’s bio:
Gil Levonai is vice president of products for Zerto. He spearheads marketing and product management, supporting the corporate vision by leading the go-to-market strategy. With more than 20 years of experience in various technology management disciplines including marketing, product management, sales, business development and R&D, Gil most recently served as principal at Gil Levonai Strategic Marketing, a consulting firm specializing in high-tech marketing. He previously served as vice president of marketing and strategy at NextNine, a company providing service automation solutions to global enterprises.

Here’s my list of questions…

Q. I was quite struck by some “unique” features in Zerto that haven’t seen elsewhere. The one that really made me smile was the CDP/Journal rollback. Can you explain how this works and give us a quick demo???

Q. Replication in Zerto is “Async” but you also talk about it consistently replicating. I’m confused… I thought asynch meant every N minutes, so how can it be constantly replicating???

Q. There will be some who say that replication is now a commodity – given that many storage vendors now roll that into their products. How would react to such an assertion? Isn’t it really about automation, not replication???

Q. What controls are there if on bandwidth, latency – what happens if a link goes down or WAN link becomes unexpected saturated???

Q. I’m thinking of new future of storage – Cheap, commodity based storage for capacity with no fancy features – with a VA’s on top doing fancy things like backup, DR… Is that the future you see too???

Q. What improvements, enhancements are planned for Zerto? What are customers really asking to be improved or added?

As ever if you want the MP3 version of the chinwag it’s here – but to be honest it’s much easier to subscribe to the MP3 podcast via iTunes which means the podcast will be download when ever I do them. Alternatively, if you would prefer the videos on your iPAD/iPOD/iPhone – you subscribe to the video version of the Chinwags there (beware they are big!). If you don’t use iTunes, here’s the generic RSS Feed link

If you want to see the video in hi-resolution and full density – you can open it here.

I think it’s a great mechanism to reach out to the masses for the means to educate, and to push out messaging in a wide scale. I can honestly say that if it wasn’t for blogging and social media, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today professionally (thanks Chad).

With that said, my good buddy Eric Siebert over at vSphere-land has opened up voting for his top blogs lists called the vLaunchPad, and I’d like to reach out to my readers and frequent visitors to please go out to his site and vote for me along with your other favorite virtualization focused blogs. When you go vote you’ll be asked to choose your top-10 favorite blogs and boy is it going to be difficult to choose, the blogosphere has literally blown up and there are new blogs popping up almost daily so it may take you some time to choose.

Regardless of who you vote for, even if it isn’t me, please be sure to vote… as I can attest, blogging is almost like having another job as it is extremely difficult to find content to write on as well as develop. The people that are behind the great sites you’ll be voting on really put some great effort (typically at the expense of their families) to provide us with great information. Voting closes on 2/7, so please Rock The Vote as soon as possible! :)

OK. Its perhaps a bit early for the presidential elections – but it’s never too early to vote in Eric Siebert’s every popular popularity contest. If you vote for me, I promise to cry and thank my mom & dad…

Eric has once again started a poll to ask people to vote for their favorite VMware & Virtualization blogs. On his vSphere-Land page you can see the results of the previous voting. This year Eric has added some extra categories for which you can vote.

This year the voting is sponsored by TrainSignal and you have chance to win copies of their vSphere5 and View training videos.

You can vote here: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/786135/Top-VMware-virtualization-blogs-2012

Eric suggest you use this criteria in your voting:
Longevity – Anyone can start a blog but it requires dedication, time & effort to keep it going. Some bloggers start a blog only to have it fall to the wayside several months later. Things always come up in life but the good bloggers keep going regardless of what is happening in their life.
Length – It’s easy to make a quick blog post without much content, nothing wrong with this as long as you have good content in the post that people will enjoy. But some bloggers post pretty long detailed posts which takes a lot of time and effort to produce. The tip of the hat goes to these guys that burn the midnight oil trying to get you some great detailed information.
Frequency – Some bloggers post several times a week which provides readers with lots of content. This requires a lot of effort as bloggers have to come up with more content ideas to write about. Frequency ties into length, some do high frequency/low length, some do low frequency/high length, some do both. They’re all good and require a lot of time and effort on the bloggers part.
Quality – It all comes down to whats in the blog post regardless of how often or how long the blog posts are. After reading a blog post if you come away with learning something that you did not previously know and it benefits you in some way then you know you are reading a quality post. Good quality is usually the result of original content, its easy to re-hash something previously published elsewhere, the good bloggers come up with unique content or put their own unique spin on popular topics.

News: VMTurbo Delivers First Application Aware Service Assurance Solution

VMTurbo has broken new ground by delivering the first application aware automated service assurance solution for VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix XenServer. This is the first solution that takes advantage of the dynamic nature of these platforms and their control API's to actually ensure something (throughput) that application owners care about. Preemptively assuring throughput (and hopefully response time in the future) may be a more effective approach than waiting for something to go wrong and then trying to pick the one root cause out of the hundreds or thousands of potential candidates.
At the moment I’m working through the typo corrections for the second pressing of the SRM 5.0 book. In the main these are little corrections in the text. But occasionally, I come across something a little bit more major. You would not believe how much work goes into the review process – but even the most rigorous process – its still possible for something to slip through the net. I guess its testament to how reading something on screen is never the same as reading in the printed hard-copy format.

There will be an official errata but in the interest in turning these around rapidly I wanted to blog about them here.

I intend to main this page as find errors or mistakes. If you spot any technical errors or mistakes like this – let me know and if I think they warrant it I will include them on this page…

iSCSI Chapters and Static Discovery
There’s a couple of chapters where I cover iSCSI in EMC Celerra, Dell Equallogic and HP P4000 – where I state that the iSCSI Software Initiator does not support “static discovery” of target. Actually, if you look into the static discovery tab after using a iSCSI SRA you will see entries populated there.

page 91 – At the Protected Site – (With thanks to Michael Armstrong)
This typo was found my Michael Armstrong. In it I refer to carrying at task out on a EMC Clarrion at the Protected Site. Step 1 however, erroneously says that “in my case, this called “New_Jersey_Cluster1″. That should, of course read “New_York_Cluster1″. As a consequence the graphic (Figure 4.22) is incorrect as it shows me selecting the “New Jersey” storage group in UniSphere, when it should have the “New York” storage group selected instead.

page 209 – vSphere Replication and IP Pools
In the beta programme the set-up of VR required the use of IP Pools. This was subsequently dropped in the release candidate and the GA. This reference slipped through the net. To be clear, VR does NOT require IP Pools.

page 218 – NFS and iSCSI
In the VR chapter I have a screen grab where a VM on local storage in the Protected Site being replicated to local storage in the Recovery Site. However in the text I say that one VM is on NFS storage, and the other is on iSCSI storage. That isn’t the case. It’s not a showstopper – if you remember VR does not care what the datastore type is…

page 228 – SRM Communication on port 80
My explanation of why the SRM installer uses Port 80 in the book isn’t a bad one. But after publication I found a better explanation which I blogged about recently. It’s largely of acedemic interest this one, but in the interests of being as technically accurate this better…

page 237 – Invalid Site name mentioned
This is a cosmetic error. Throughout the book I make reference to site of New York, New Jersey and later still Washington DC. For some bizarre reason I name check “Chicago” here. That should really read “New Jersey”.

According to a NetworkWorld article, IBM's CP-67 software used partitioning technology to allow many applications to be run at once on a mainframe computer. While its impact was substantial for mainframe users, it took years before a direct descendant of IBM's work came back to life on X86 platforms. In fact the existence of virtualization as a concept went largely unremarked for the nearly two decades of the rise of client/server on x86 platforms. Still, it served as a powerful inspiration for VMware to reviving the concept and apply it to x86 machines....(read more)
